The New South Wales Independent Planning Commission (IPC) has rejected a proposal for a major expansion of an open pit coal mine in the Hunter Valley.

It has been proposed that Glencore’s Glendell Continued Operations project near Singleton would produce an additional 135 million tonnes of coal over two decades.

The IPC says the project is “not in the public interest” and the removal of the nearby Ravensworth Homestead would harm Aboriginal heritage values.
