The mining and resource giant Glencore is being forced to pay £281million in fines, confiscated profits and costs as a penalty for “persistent crime”, the largest payment ever imposed on a company in a UK court.

A judge at Southwark Crown Court in London on Thursday said criminal offenses by a British subsidiary of Glencore showed high culpability for the “highly corrosive” offence.
